Welcome and thank you for visiting our blog. The British Heart Foundation Jersey Branch was established in 1972 to support the life saving research of the BHF. We have created this page to help Islanders keep up to date with local events, activities and ways in which you can support our local fight against heart disease.
The Jersey Heart Awards are designed to recognise the amazing Islanders who make up our fight against cardiovascular disease - one of Jersey's biggest killers. With local cases of heart disease predicted to increase by over 63% in the next 30 years, this is very much a problem of today and the future which we need address now.
Our local fighters come in many forms and ages and so each category reflects a vital role being played within our community to beat this heartless disease. From the quick thinking Islanders who have performed CPR, to the thought leaders challenging individuals to make healthy life-choices. Finalists include children and adults living with heart conditions whom have chosen to fight back, individuals who dedicate their time to support to someone living with a heart condition and our amazing group of volunteers and fundraisers - without whom, our work would not be possible.
Thanks to the amazing support of our volunteers, event team, performers, sponsors and supporters, the Jersey Heart Awards 2018 has raised over £7,500 for the BHF Jersey Branch.
Heart Champion 2018 Michelle Renouf
Finalists: Valery Pounds & Catherine Maclachlan
The Heart Champion Award wishes to recognise courageous and strong individuals who have personally joined the fight against heart disease. Our finalists are Islanders living with a heart condition yet they refuse to take it lying down; they have fought back to prove that it will not define their future and that it is possible to beat this heartless disease. Each of these finalist is a true champion in their own right and ambassadors for bravery and strength within the local community.
Heart Supporter 2018 Angela Hall
Finalists: Anne Van der Vliet & Mark Harris
Finalists for the Heart Supporter Award have been nominated by their peers as incredible individuals who help others on a daily basis. These Islanders offer their tireless support to those living with a heart condition and their strength and knowledge is offered freely as a means of making others feel better. All finalists offer invaluable support to people fighting a daily battle against heart disease and should feel extremely proud and appreciated by those who surround them.

Award: Young Heart Hero Sponsored by Ravenscroft
Finley Good (6 years old) & Daniel Mark Canham (9 years old)
There are some Islanders who are born into bravery. Across the Channel Islands and UK, around 12 babies are born each day with a heart defect. These babies grow up living in a world in which a fight for every heart beat is a day-to-day battle. The BHF have funded advances in medical research which give these children a fighting chance at beating their condition and going on to live happy and wholesome lives. Our Young Heart Hero finalists are examples of true bravery and strength. They not only prove that they are champions on a daily basis, but they help others to understand their condition and the importance of heart health. They are ambassadors amongst their peers, raising awareness and exemplifying courage so that others can follow their example in beating similar conditions.
Award: Super Volunteer Sponsored by CCA Galleries :Mark Harris
Finalists: Pamela Parkin & Liz Olim
As a local registered charity, the BHF Jersey Branch relies entirely on the support of our volunteers. Our local mission is to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, oer support & advice to those in need and to fundraise to enable life-saving research so that fewer Islanders die prematurely due to this heartless disease. These Super Volunteer finalists have each played a major role in supporting our local mission. They have volunteered their time, creative ideas and expertise to help with local fundraising activities. They have taken on new skills, recruited friends and colleagues and acted as true ambassadors within the local community. The support of each of these finalists has been absolutely inestimable and crucial in our fundraising success, the BHF Jersey Branch are extremely grateful for their ongoing support.
Award: Fundraising Champion Tracy Barnes
Finalists: Melissa Le Cheminant & John A-Court
Across the nation there are currently thousands of BHF funded research projects taking place which will save the lives of Islanders sat in this room tonight. This life-saving research would not possible without the support of Islanders like our three Fundraising Champions.
Each of our finalists took on extreme personal challenges in the name of our fight against heart disease. They have acted as ambassadors within the community, offered ideas to benefit others and taken themselves out of their comfort zones to show bravery, passion and determination. Their actions have played a vital role in our fight, not just through fundraising activities but in raising awareness amongst peers in engaging ways.
Award: Local Life Saver Sponsored by Rossborough Healthcare:
Finalists: Andre Le Geyt & Marilee Picot
This is a very special award in recognition of Islanders who have used their quick thinking and knowledge of CPR to save a life!
Nationally, if you have a cardiac arrest outside of hospital, you have a less than 10% chance of survival. This is something which the BHF are determined to change and here in Jersey we are striving to build an Island of life-savers.
Our three finalists are amazing individuals, each with a different reason for being here tonight. Whether they are helping others to learn the life-saving skill of CPR or using CPR themselves in hope of saving a life. Their bravery deserves to be celebrated.
