Welcome and thank you for visiting our blog. The British Heart Foundation Jersey Branch was established in 1972 to support the life saving research of the BHF. We have created this page to help Islanders keep up to date with local events, activities and ways in which you can support our local fight against heart disease.
The British Heart Foundation is delighted to announce the re-launch of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Jersey Branch under a new Committee chaired by Haydn Taylor.
CCA Galleries International are very pleased to be supporting the re-launch with a special exhibition of artworks created for the British Heart Foundation’s ‘Mending Broken Hearts Appeal’. The ‘Breath of Life’ portfolio includes a unique collection of silkscreen prints created by leading contemporary artists on the theme of ‘Mending Broken Hearts’. Exhibiting artists include Sir Peter Blake, Maggi Hambling, John Hoyland, Donald Hamilton Fraser, Storm Thorgerson, Bruce McLean, Rob Ryan, Antony Micallef, Duggie Fields, Brad Faine, Gerard Hemsworth, Brendan Neiland, Barbara Rae, Maurice Cockrill, Patrick Hughes and Tom Phillips. All publishers’ profits from sales of the artworks will be donated to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Jersey Branch. The exhibition is on display at CCA Galleries International until 2pm on Saturday 16 May 2015.
A special event was held to re-launch the Jersey Branch at CCA’s Gallery in Hill Street, sponsored by CCA and Ravenscroft Stockbroking and Investment Management on Thursday 30th April. During the evening, Haydn Taylor presented a special award to Mrs Sally Craig, the wife of longstanding former Chairman Harry Craig who passed away recently. Former Committee Members Vicky Scarborough and Ian Ling were also recognised with awards for their longstanding service to the BHF. The event was also attended by local supporters, heart patients and the Jersey General Hospital Cardiology team.
Special guests who attended the re-launch included the Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, Simon Gillespie who spoke about the Charity’s 20:20 Strategy to focus on Research, Prevention and Support. The BHF Fundraising Director, Louise Parkes also spoke about the importance of local support for fundraising. A Local Heart Hero Award was presented by the Lieutenant Governor, General Sir John McColl to Carol-Ann Le Boutillier, who saved a person’s life last year by performing life-saving CPR until the emergency services arrived.
Liz Purgal, Vice Chairman of the BHF Jersey Branch and Gallery Manager at CCA said; ‘We are delighted to be hosting this exhibition on behalf of the BHF Jersey Branch and hope to help increase awareness of the charity’s work which is so important to the Island.”
The BHF Jersey Branch has been instrumental in funding a number of important initiatives in recent years, including two BHF Specialist Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurses at the General Hospital, Lee-Ann Penn and Lisa Anderson. A new 3D Echo machine was also acquired for the Hospital and specialist training was provided as members of the BHF’s UK Alliance Scheme. A BHF Grant supported the formation of the Jersey Heart Support Group with whom the Jersey Branch works closely and which provides support to people living with heart conditions in the Island.
Haydn Taylor, Chairman of BHF Jersey Branch, said “This is very much the start of a new journey for the BHF in the Island and we were delighted with the support we received for our re-launch which was attended by over 150 people. Heart and Circulatory disease is responsible for one in four deaths in the Island and last year the BHF invested £115m into new life saving heart research which will benefit many Islanders. Thanks to this research, over 70% of people who suffer a heart attack will now survive.
We are particularly pleased to have secured the services of Summer Parkin as our first Fundraising Manager and we will be announcing a number of exciting new fund raising events over the coming months. We are looking for people to help us with our ‘Fight for Every Heartbeat’ and I would ask anyone who would like to help us raise funds for this very important cause to make contact with Summer or myself.”
